Dr. Golnar Hassirian from Sweden-Iran

I would like to begin by expressing my sincere gratitude for the invitation to be part of this Alumni Portrait Series. It is truly an honour to reflect on my journey, and I feel very proud to be part of the alumni community of McDaniel College.
My academic path began with the Pre-Medical (Foundation) programme at McDaniel College, which played a defining role in shaping my future. That year gave me far more than academic preparation. It provided structure, confidence, and a clear understanding of what to expect from medical training. It allowed me to transition into university life with clarity and purpose, something I came to appreciate even more in the years that followed.
Following this, I continued my studies at Semmelweis University. Thanks to the strong foundation built during my Pre-Med year, I felt comfortable and prepared from the very beginning. The transition was smooth, and I was able to focus immediately on developing my knowledge and clinical thinking rather than adapting to a completely new system.
What stood out to me most early on was how purpose-driven the education was. Every subject - from physics and biochemistry to anatomy and clinical sciences was directly connected to my future career. This made learning both engaging and meaningful. From day one, I felt that I was on the right path, with each subject contributing to the professional I wanted to become.
Strengthening my understanding of core sciences was particularly valuable. Subjects like physics and biochemistry, which can often feel abstract at first, became essential in building my clinical mindset. They helped me develop precision, analytical thinking, and confidence. qualities that continue to influence my work today.
Equally important was the environment. Being part of an international student community created a unique and supportive atmosphere. We studied together, supported one another, and built friendships that extended far beyond university life. It truly felt like a second family, and I remain in contact with many of those I met during that time.
Like any meaningful journey, there were challenges. Adapting to a new country, a new education system, and the demands of medical training required resilience. However, one of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of asking for help. The support from teachers, mentors, and peers was always there and it made a significant difference in overcoming challenges and continuing forward with confidence.
Today, I am a Principal Dentist in Central London, co-leading a private clinic with my husband Dr. Charlie Attariani. My primary focus is cosmetic dentistry, with the majority of my work dedicated to Invisalign treatments.
Looking back, I feel immense gratitude for the foundation I received at McDaniel College and the education I continued at Semmelweis University. These experiences did not just shape my academic path. they shaped my life. I met people who influenced my future, inspired me, and supported me in ways I will always be thankful for.
To current and future students, my advice is simple:
Do not be afraid to ask for help.
The support around you is there for a reason. Use it, learn from it, and grow. Some of the most important moments in your journey will come from reaching out and allowing others to guide you.
Trust the process, stay focused, and remember, you are building something meaningful, one step at a time.
